In a small village called Asempa lived a young boy named Kojo. He was the only son of a hardworking farmer and a market woman. Kojo’s parents loved him dearly and always taught him important values such as honesty, respect, kindness, and hard work. However, as Kojo grew older, he began to admire people who appeared successful without putting in much effort. He often wished for quick riches and an easy life.

One day, while helping his father on the farm, Kojo complained bitterly.

“Father,” he said, “why do we work so hard every day? Some people seem to have everything they need without suffering in the sun like we do.”

His father smiled and replied, “My son, success that comes through hard work lasts longer than success gained through shortcuts. One day, you will understand.”

Kojo was not convinced. Deep inside, he believed there was a faster way to become rich and respected.

A few months later, a stranger arrived in the village. The man dressed elegantly and told stories of how he became wealthy within a short period of time. Many young people admired him, including Kojo. The stranger claimed he knew secret ways of making money without much effort. Kojo listened carefully and became excited.

That evening, Kojo told his parents about the stranger.

His mother warned him, “Be careful, my son. Not everything that shines is gold.”

But Kojo ignored her advice. He secretly began spending time with the stranger, hoping to discover the secret to quick wealth.

The stranger asked Kojo to lie to his parents and borrow money from them, promising that he would multiply it within a few days. Because of greed, Kojo did as he was told. He lied to his parents and took some money they had saved for farming activities.

Days passed, but the stranger kept making excuses. One morning, the villagers woke up to discover that the stranger had disappeared. He had taken money from many people and fled.

Kojo felt ashamed and heartbroken. He realized that he had not only lost money but had also broken his parents’ trust. Fear filled his heart as he returned home.

With tears in his eyes, Kojo confessed everything to his parents.

“I am sorry,” he said. “I was greedy, and I lied to you. Please forgive me.”

His parents were disappointed, but they forgave him.

His father said, “My son, making mistakes is part of life, but learning from them is wisdom. Remember that honesty and hard work are better than greed and dishonesty.”
